The Shetland showcase of food, music, crafts and culture– Flavour of Shetland – opens today (Thursday 25 June) on Victoria Pier at 11.00am.  The popular four-day event has firmly established itself on the local event calendar and attracts visitors and locals alike with its full programme of entertainment and activities.

This year sees some new additions to the line-up, which visitors can sample for the first time today.  Traditional food enthusiasts Margaret Stuart and Wilma Couper will be demonstrating how to make traditional bannocks and beremeal bannocks daily at 11.30am, 1.00pm, 2.30pm and 4.00pm and discussing other traditional recipes.

Chef Glynn Wright has teamed up with Seafood Shetland and Shetland Aquaculture to serve up a delicious menu of dishes including fish and chips, creamy smoked fish chowder and a deluxe seafood platter, as well as daily specials including seafood paella.  North Atlantic Shellfish is joining the stand and will be cooking up a variety of mussel dishes.

Today’s line-up includes music by Kollifirbolli, Fishing Notes and Fullsceilidh Spellemenslag, while Davy Cooper will be telling tales of myth and legend, together with stories from the Old Norse sagas between 1.30pm and 5.00pm.

Tomorrow’s line-up includes Jordan Ogg, as well as Sandy Legget and Peter Wood, playing during the day.  On Friday evening, the Revellers and Hom Bru will take to the stage.

Event organiser Nicola Halcrow commented: “I’m delighted that, once again, we’ve kick-started Flavour of Shetland in style.  The full programme of activities on offer makes this a great event for all the family.  Its success is testament to the hard work of so many individuals.  I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has played a part in ensuring we stage an event that will be a big hit with all who visit, and will make Victoria Pier the place to be this weekend.”
