Once more, plans are well underway for one of Shetland’s biggest summer events. Now heading for it’s fourth year, Flavour of Shetland celebrates some of the best local music, craft, culture and food.
From Thursday 19 to Sunday 22 June, Victoria Pier will once again be transformed into a market place for craft and food as well as staging some of Shetland’s finest entertainers. Over the past few years the event has proved extremely popular recording a footfall of more than 43,000 visits last year.
A firm favourite at the event is the variety of music within the entertainment marquee. Taking to the stage will be a number of old favourites along with some emerging talent new to Flavour of Shetland.
Some of Shetland’s best craftspeople will once again showcase their products highlighting the range of craft and knitwear available locally. Visitors will be able to browse through the market stalls and buy quality items.
Visitors to the event certainly won’t go hungry either! The food stalls will be serving up a range of Shetland produce cooked not only in traditional ways but also with an international twist.
Organisers of the event are also thrilled to announce that BBC Radio Scotland will once again broadcast Tom Morton’s show live from the entertainment tent on Friday 20 from 2pm-4pm. Special guest on the show will be Edwyn Collins who will give an exclusive live performance accompanied by Roddy Frame and Andy Hackett as well as local musicians including Sheila Henderson. The show’s producer Jenny Seymour said “Tom and the team are delighted to be broadcasting from the Festival again after the warm and enthusiastic welcome from the audience and organisers experienced last year.”
Event Organiser, Nicola Halcrow commented, “We’re really pleased that the BBC have asked to come back to the event again. As well as adding to our programme of events, the value in getting national, and through the internet, international exposure for Shetland is immeasurable.
“It’s difficult to say what single thing makes Flavour of Shetland so successful, ultimately it has to go down to the mix of activities and the people taking part. We hope that through this event we can pull together a snapshot of Shetland and not only showcase Shetland to our visitors, but create a sense of pride within the local community.”
