A CELEBRATION OF SHETLAND FOOD, DRINK, MUSIC, CRAFT AND CULTURE
Flavour of Shetland launches in style on victoria Pier
June 22 2007
Flavour of Shetland got off to a flying start yesterday (21 June) as Victoria Pier filled with partygoers all fired up to enjoy the veritable feast of food and drink, music, crafts, culture and entertainment laid on to celebrate the very best of the islands. The action packed programme continues today as people get set for the festival weekend.
One of the big attractions is the cookery demonstrations performed by Master Chefs George McIvor and Colin Bussey, who are joined by local guests Glynn Wright and Eunice Henderson. The chefs have specially requested a selection of local produce for the occasion including: white fish from Blydoit Fish Ltd; mussels from North Atlantic Shellfish; salmon from Scottish Sea Farms; smoked salmon from Shetland Smokehouse; cod from No Catch Just Cod; lamb from Taste Shetland; ales from Valhalla Brewery; a variety of dairy produce from Shetland Farm Dairies; freshly baked bread from Walls Bakery; and salad leaves from Pete and Linda Glanville.
Some of Shetland’s finest musicians have come together with 11 food and drink stallholders, 15 talented craftspeople, a group of intriguing storytellers and one highly entertaining clown to create a real buzz on the pier.
Today’s line up includes live music sessions from
Shetland Fiddlers, Jordan Ogg, Drop The Box and Loveshack. Cheeko the
Clown will be performing a games show at 2.00pm and a magic show at
4.00pm as well as sculpting balloons and blowing giant bubbles
throughout the day.
A highlight for tomorrow is the Viking parade which starts at 2pm from Fort Charlotte (north exit). Jarl squads from throughout Shetland will march along Commercial Street and the Esplanade and onto Commercial street from Church Road . The procession will end at the Market Cross where the guizers will sing the traditional up helly aa songs.
Event organiser Nicola Halcrow expressed her delight at the success of the launch. “I’m very pleased that, following many months of planning, Flavour of Shetland has once again been kick started in style. I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has played their part in ensuring that the event is such a hit with visitors and locals, and for making Victoria Pier the place to be this weekend.”
