A CELEBRATION OF SHETLAND’S BEST FOOD, DRINK, MUSIC, CRAFT AND CULTURE
Flavour Of Shetland 2008
Flavour of Shetland 2008 will probably be remembered for two things – wind and rain! Despite the weather a huge number of folk came to enjoy the packed programme over the weekend.
Some of Shetland’s finest musicians came together with nine food and drink outlets, 15 talented craftspeople, and local story-teller Davy Cooper to create a memorable weekend for those attending. Children weren’t disappointed either as they were entertained with various indoor activities and Cheeko the Clown!
Event organisers were delighted to welcome back BBC Radio Scotland Tom Morton Show which was aired live from the entertainment marquee. Special guest on the show was Edwyn Collins who gave an exclusive live performance accompanied by Roddy Frame and Andy Hackett. Local musicians Sheila Henderson and Kollifirbolli added to the line up bringing a real taste of Shetland talent to the show.
Event goers were able to choose from a range of savoury dishes both with a traditional and international flavour which show off the versatility of local produce including lamb, beef, salmon, pork, scallops and mussels. A range of locally made fudge, toffee, ice-cream, preserves were also available along with traditional Italian style coffees, teas and home bakes.
Among those exhibiting in the craft village were Aamos Designs with their range of woven textiles; Pink Fish with a range of uniquely designed cards, badges and key rings; and Oksana Peterson Designs producing a range of handmade jewellery from glass beads, crystals, silver wire and semiprecious stones.
For the children, a range of activities took place including face painting, traditional craft activities and the ever-popular rowing challenge. Back for his second year was Cheeko the Clown who performed balloon modelling, circus skills and magic shows throughout the event.
Commenting after the event, Event Organiser Nicola Halcrow said, “Once again we’ve had a fantastic line up of activities and participants. Key to the success of any festival is participation and I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has taken part this year.”
