Major Event Gives a Real Flavour of Shetland

This year’s Flavour of Shetland extravaganza (22 to 25 June) has not only attracted the very best of the islands’ food and drink producers to take centre stage on Lerwick’s Victoria Pier, but the abundance of fine produce has also caught the eye of two of Britain’s finest Master Chefs who will be making a trip to Shetland especially for the four day event.

Master Chefs George McIvor and Donald Munro, development chef at Nestlé, will provide cookery demonstrations on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 June to inspire locals and visitors alike to make the most of the enticing range of seafood products available.

Tempting as this may sound and it is it doesn’t just stop at seafood demonstrations. Other food producers to be found at the centre of this gastronomic feast include TasteShetland, Shetland Smokehouse, The Olive Tree, Herrislea House Lamb, The Great Wall, Shetland Fudge Company, Peerie Treats, Blue Coo Ice Cream and Merrie Dancers, which can all be washed down with a white spirits cocktail shaken and stirred by Blackwood Distillers or a pint of almighty ale poured by Valhalla Brewery.

Commenting on the sheer variety of produce on offer, event organiser Nicola Halcrow said: “This year’s food and drink producers have really excelled coming together to provide the very finest flavour of Shetland in one place, and enough to cater for every taste and palate.

“TasteShetland are laying on a barbecue-style banquet with lamb chops, lamb kebabs, lamb fajitas and award-winning lamb burgers all handmade and freshly prepared using their unique and distinctive lamb.

“The menu from Shetland Smokehouse includes smoked haddock chowder, pitta bread with marinated herring, and a selection of seafood wraps and open sandwiches.

“The Olive Tree will sell its own range of homemade salads, cooked meat and fish. Freshly baked baguettes, focaccia and quiche will be cooked on site all day every day. The baguettes and focaccia can be filled to order. The delicatessen will also have its ever popular salad boxes available as well as offering continental style coffees prepared using an authentic Italian coffee machine and Shetland milk, accompanied by a range of homemade cakes and biscuits.

“As well as selling Unstoyst’s fresh Shetland oysters, The Olive Tree has sourced a range of other high quality products from Shetland including crab, pork, bacon, squid, beef, smoked mackerel pate and smoked salmon.”

“From its food stall, Herrislea House Lamb will offer a variety of lamb products including lamb burgers with salad, smoked lamb chops, soup and lamb korma. The Great Wall will also make excellent use of our local produce, combining Shetland salmon, scallops and lamb with a variety of oriental sauces to create some tasty dishes.

“It’s only really on occasions like these when you bring together all of our fine food producers that we can really appreciate what an amazing selection of produce we now have available in the islands. I hope that, not only does Flavour of Shetland successfully bring home to locals and visitors alike what a wealth of delicious food and drink is grown, caught and handmade here, but that we are able to spread the word further afield so that Shetland receives the culinary recognition it deserves worldwide.
